CHAPTER 21

Amy smoothed her yellow tea dress down to avoid looking at Jack. Something was happening between them that really shouldn’t be, given that he was going home so soon. They joined in the applause that the band had earned and while Amy watched the musicians as they put down their instruments for a break, she could feel Jack’s gaze fixed firmly on her.

She was too embarrassed to catch his eye again and they spoke at the same time.

‘I owe you—’ Amy started.

‘Do you want to—’ Jack laughed. ‘No, no, you go first.’

They left the dance tent and Amy was grateful for the fresh air. She’d only been dancing for a few minutes but felt flushed. Perhaps it was the cider, or the close proximity of dancing with Jack. Either way she was warm.

‘I owe you money,’ Amy said as they walked slowly. ‘Quite a bit of money actually.’

Jack looked taken aback. ‘How do you figure that?’

‘All your pictures have sold. All but one.’

‘No way.’ He stopped and gave her a doubtful look.

‘I told you they’d be a hit. And they were. Can you do more?’

‘I can do more.’ He shrugged and then looked at his watch. ‘Today?’

‘No, not today,’ she said, laughing. ‘I’ve been thinking, if you send me the files, I can get them printed and framed and put them up, if you trust me with the files, of course. It’s going to be too much for you to try to sort.’

‘Why is it going to be too much for me to sort?’

Amy looked at him with laughter in her eyes. ‘You want to organise it all from New York?’

‘I don’t mind.’ He smiled. ‘It’s my job after all.’

‘You’re going home tomorrow. If you still want your gorgeous photographs displayed in my sleepy Suffolk village tearoom then you’re going to have to meet me halfway here. I can’t be forever hassling you if I’m running out?’ Amy gave him a sly smile.

‘You can hassle me. I wouldn’t mind.’ He’d stopped and his head was tilted on one side, his smile playful.

Flirting with Jack was harmless and only for today as he was flying home tomorrow. And what was the harm in a little casual flirting?

‘Okay.’ She held up her hands in defeat. ‘If you have time to sort it all out from the other side of the Atlantic then be my guest …’

He held his hand out to shake hers. Amy clasped his hand.

‘Pleasure doing business with you,’ she replied.

Jack laughed. ‘You’re so English.’ But he didn’t let go of her hand and as his smile slowly faded, the intensity of his gaze deepened. ‘I’ve really enjoyed spending time with you,’ he said, their hands still clasped. He looked down at their entwined fingers, his thumb rubbed gently on hers.

Amy’s breath caught. ‘Me too.’

‘So,’ he said in a low voice. ‘Now we’re kind of in business together, I suppose I should take you out and schmooze you a little. Get you on side so you don’t go rogue and find another photographer to pit me against.
